Why Biomedical Engineering at SIET

We encourage the curiosity of aspiring engineers through the engineering exploration lab, where students can experiment both hardware and software in their projects from I to V semester.

Every semester the students in teams of three to four members were encouraged and supported to make new creative projects which is then displayed in the project expo. This not only improves their creativity and problem solving ability but also provides a space for them to improve their team work and communication skills.

The system of traditional education is enhanced in our institution via sandwich programme with 30 days in field (industry/research institute/hospitals) 60 days in campus from II year.

As the motive of providing continuous linkage between industries, research institutes and hospitals, we have MOU with various hospitals and laboratories such as Royal Care super speciality Hospital - Coimbatore, Orbito Asia Diagnostics, Clarity imaging centre Coimbatore, Zenith medical equipments, Coimbatore, Dheepam hospital Chennai, Prashan medical technologies Coimbatore, etc.

Medical Camp

Department of Biomedical Engineering students and KG Hospital has jointly organized a Free Mega Health care Camp on 23/7/2022 nearly 150 people are benefitted. Medical camps provide free medical advice, medicine to the unfortunate people and refer for specialized treatment or surgery whenever it is required. These camps make sure people are getting healthcare at the right time, and seeing the doctor early enough before a small health problem turns serious. Faculties, volunteers, KS Hospital Staffs and out peoples was present at the function. Medical staff from KG Hospital: Five Doctors with various specializations were present in the camp to facilitate healthcare services to the people.

A total of 147 patients got the benefits of the free camp. The patients above 40 years were screened for Diabetes, Hypertension and cardiovascular diseases using ECG. They were given treatment on spot with the help of specialists from Doctors, ECHO Technician, and Lab Technician and Paramedical staffs. During the health camp, a range of services like routine medical check-up and above 30 tests included.

Laboratory Facility

Our laboratories provide a real time working environment to our students and this practical training enables faster and better understanding of the theoretical concepts. All equipments are calibrated and maintained to enable our students to enjoy their learning experience.

One such lab is Hematology laboratory, where students can analyse blood samples in the same method like hospital does to analyze blood test report. The laboratory includes Laminar air flow chamber, spectrophotometry, calorimeter, centrifuge, incubator, microscope etc.

Students perform real time testing of blood samples to assess glucose level, cholesterol level, various serum protein level, creatinine and other blood components. Students can also research on the growth of various microorganisms via the usage of incubator, centrifuge, Spectrophotometer, Colorimeter, and microscope that are calibrated and maintained in proper conditions.

Another significant laboratory is our Advanced biomedical equipments laboratory, where high level, hospital - grade equipments are maintained and used for education. Equipments such as the Ultrasound scanner, Ventilator, Dialysis machine, Defibrillator, pacemaker etc are available to provide real time demo of the same for the students.

The students are given hands on training to operate ultrasound scanner in its various mode. Different modes of Ultrasound scan and ultrasound probes along with their application are demonstrated in real time.

With the help of ventilator students are able to operate, modulate and check the functions of different modes of ventilation working function.

Our department real time hemodialyzer machine is operated using coloured solution to help students visualise the principles of dialysis and ultra filtration. They are trained to troubleshoot various mechanical and electrical errors in the dialysis machine. They also disassemble and assemble the parts of defibrillator and pacemaker to study the functions of every individual components.

Various educational models of the human body can be found in our Human anatomy and physiology laboratory, which serve as objects of interest for all our students to learn about the 3D models of human anatomy to visualize the actual body parts. Few to name are 3D model of Human eye, ear, brain, heart, alveoli, respiratory system, urinary system, digestive system, skeletal system, etc.

Biomedical instrumentation laboratory has a wide range of medical diagnostic equipments used to analyse the parameters like EEG, ECG, ERG, EMG, SpO2 measurement, ultrasonic bloodflow meter etc. The students take measurements for themselves or their friends. They were taught to dismantle the equipment, trouble shoot the problem and assemble the setup again.

About the Department

Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology!

Department of Biomedical engineering constituted in Jan 2016, is a 4-year professional Engineering course which trains students in the technical concepts of various Biomedical Instruments and Diagnostic Equipments, which is an is an ever-evolving branch. Our department brings together the skills from both basic medical sciences and advanced engineering, in order to solve problems in clinical healthcare. Under the umbrella of Biomedical engineering, our primary focus is to foster industry oriented education and interdisciplinary research through collaboration with leading hospitals, research centers and diagnostic centers.

Biomedical engineers focus on advances in technology and medicine to develop new devices and equipment for improving human health. Biomedical engineers work together with other healthcare professionals, such as doctors, nurses, surgeons and technicians to tackle health issues that they all come across. This has led to the creation of vital tools and devices such as MRI machines, dialysis machines, diagnostic equipment and ultrasound scanners.

Biomedical Engineers also design software to run medical equipment or computer simulations to test new drug therapies.

Rapid biomedical advances are being made in artificial organs, implants, bionic arms and life-saving medical equipment. Biomedical engineers contribute to society by introducing medicines, machines and devices that help physicians to diagnose and treat patients with disease conditions, injuries or disabilities.

We aim at unravelling the mysteries of biology and medicine through innovations in engineering and technology that can be translated in to clinical health care. Giving more importance to practical learning methodology via field visit, internships and training opportunities.

Our undergraduate program has been designed to transform the students into leaders and entrepreneur of the future. With our meticulously designed value added courses students gain exposure with the concepts of industrial importance and current trends in the field.
